How to trust in a more pleasant journey.
I don’t know about you, but I know that sometimes some things are working really well but for some reason I still question whether there is an alternative that’s better. It may be necessary to challenge things to be able to appreciate the positive aspects of them but I still find myself questioning things and challenging my beliefs and habits from time to time, even if they’re working for me.
One thing I want to just relax into is the REALITY that it’s better to do a few things CONSISTENTLY than to load up your to do list with an unachievable number of tasks. I want to lean into and trust even more that you not only achieve more just doing a few things consistently, but you also enjoy the process more.
I think the perception that you could always be doing more is something we’re all constantly challenged by but it’s so deceptive. The idea that we spend most of our modern days interacting with the best few seconds and products of other people’s lives is not a new idea but I still sometimes fall into it despite knowing acutely that it comes from a place of fear and that’s not where my best work is created.
I know so well when I start to get into over-achiever mode, I simply can’t sustain it.
It goes a little like this…
HYPOTHETICAL 1: “I’M NOT ENOUGH SO I DEFAULT TO OVER-ACHIEVER MODE” YEAR
-Get 8 tasks done in one amazing day.
-Get 5 of the 8 tasks you planned for the following day done and feel like you’re a failure.
-Find relief in junk food and Youtube.
-Feel regretful about your time wasted.
-Find 3 other procrastination activities to escape into for 3 days.
-Tell yourself you’re terrible.
-Research career changes for a week.
-Watch motivational videos for 3 days.
-Tell yourself this time will be different.
-Begin to get your energy and focus back and start to work out what tasks to do.
-Tell yourself it’s better to start your whole new super amazing productive life on the first of the month.
-Wait 11 days for a new month to begin.
-REPEAT cycle for a year.
OUTCOME:
13 tasks in 2 days, 17 days off.
13 tasks each 19 days = 247 tasks completed per year.
HYPOTHETICAL 2: “CLEAR THINKING CONSISTENCY MODE” YEAR
-Get 3 tasks done each week day for a year.
-Enjoy the process.
OUTCOME:
260 days x 3 tasks = 780 tasks per year
Call me crazy, but there is a clear winner here, right?!
So why keep questioning it? And if I’m honest, I think the solution to simply going with the flow of what works better and feels good is trust.
Trust that a positive outcome doesn't need to be achieved by feeling like you're in chaos whilst getting there. Trusting that enjoying the process doesn’t lead to complacency. Trusting that feeling deep in your gut that you’re on the right path will pull you through the tough days. Trusting that being consistent and happy on your path will attract great opportunities. Trusting that the chaos that defined your past doest need to define your future.
So, I’m going to do my best to trust. To do my daily tasks. To enjoy myself.
And I hope you’ll join me.
