Recently, I had an insightful conversation with the head of a large London print studio. She shared a sentiment that resonated: “I get so tired of every job application starting with, ‘recently graduated from [X University] with a degree in [Textile Design/Surface Pattern Design].’” This wasn’t a dismissal of degrees but a reflection on how the industry is saturated with similar qualifications and narratives.

It got me thinking about the value of working with print designers who don’t have the typical degree but bring unique strengths to the table.

The Cons:
-Lack of Formal Training: Designers without a degree might lack structured learning in areas like colour theory or textile collection processes, potentially requiring extra training.
-Limited Industry Network: Graduates often leave university with established networks that self-taught designers may need time to build.

The Pros:
-Creativity Unbound by Conventions: Without formal constraints, self-taught designers often bring fresh, experimental ideas and innovative approaches.
-Passion-Driven Expertise: Their skills are usually the result of passion and persistence, leading to highly authentic work developed outside of a curriculum.
-Trend Awareness: Many non-degree designers stay plugged into global trends via social media and influencer culture, making them adaptable and forward-thinking.
-Diverse Backgrounds = Unique Designs: Designers from nontraditional paths often blend influences from other fields, adding distinctive originality to their work.

Why Degrees Aren’t Everything:
As my conversation reminded me, degrees are a starting point but don’t guarantee originality or skill. The industry is filled with talented individuals who took unconventional routes, bringing creativity and boundary-pushing ideas to the forefront.

In the end, whether a print designer has a degree or not, their creativity, work quality, and ability to interpret trends into unique designs matter most. Collaborating with someone without traditional credentials can bring fresh energy to your brand and help it stand out in a crowded market.
